All the Roads
Words and music copyright 2020, Cynthia Marchant

the hum of the highway hypnotizes me as
memories and windswept clouds drift by like dreams
and I'm pretty sure that while we like to lay things out
to know the truth it isn't always as it seems
and we talk of pulling wool blankets out of closets
we talk of the cold months up ahead
silence comes down like a curtain aged and well worn
on the window kept open by our summer bed

when I think about the life I've led
while it's true I have regrets
I'm thankful all the roads led me here to you

geese form patterns in the sky as south they fly
for weather you and I love extreme seasons
a patchwork countryside farms, woods, rusted cars
miles and miles of gently rolling reasons
there's a vagueness in the way we talk of the future
a comfort in living day to day
and I wonder and I sometimes ask what you're thinking
and I'm always surprised by what you say

when I think about the life I've led
while it's true I have regrets
I'm thankful all the roads led me here to you

and when I leave here tomorrow leave you in my sorrow
we found joy in true love I know it's hard to find
I will have joy in this heart as I leave you behind

and when I think about the life I've led
while it's true I've had regrets
I'm thankful all the roads led me to
